So, what is all the fuss about noise cancelling headphones? Do they really work for blocking outside noise? Are they really worth the money?
Noise cancelling headphones are like companions for frequent travellers and they really do a good job.
The ones that I OWN and HIGHLY recommend are the Bose QuietComfort 25 Acoustic Noise Cancelling Headphones and they are available on Amazon.
They are reasonably priced, less than half the cost of the QC 35s. There is an android version which is also available on Amazon for those having android devices.
Bose has been the industry leader in noise cancelling technology.
If sound quality is your top priority and noise cancelling is not too important, then I do not recommend buying these. Not that the sound quality of the QC 25 is bad, it’s only that there are some better ones out there.
However, for noise cancelling, there is nothing which beats the Bose.
What I Like About These Headphones
I wanted headphones that are good for noise cancelling and comfortable to wear. So, after buying these headphones and using them for some time, here are the things that I liked most about them.
The biggest plus point of the QC 25 is its noise cancelling performance and I was glad that I had made the right choice. The worth of noise cancelling can be understood only by experiencing it.
The most pronounced effect can be felt while travelling in an airplane as it can drown out 95 percent of the engine noise.
With outside noises muffled out, listening to music is a pleasure and getting sleep in flight is not too difficult anymore. I can’t imagine travelling without these, I’m so hooked on to them.
After comfort, the next best thing that I like about the QC 25 is the lightweight and comfort. They are very soft on the ears and cup so well that they can be literally worn for several hours without any problems. They are very comfortable even for bigger heads.
I really like the sound quality but this is a personal choice.
I did feel the quality of bass seriously lacking as compared to Bose’s competitors. But, I’m not too much into high bass stuff and I found the crisp and clear audio of the QC 25 to be great for my liking.
The QC 25 is priced well at under $200 for noise cancelling headphones of this quality. I do not recommend going for the upgraded version as it costs well above $300. That’s quite a price difference.
The QC 25 uses one AAA battery for its operation which is great as compared to the proprietary battery fitted on the QC20. They’re so convenient to replace.
What I Didn’t Like
There are some things I didn’t like about the Bose QC 25 but they were not big enough for me to regret buying them.
Hissing in Quiet Environments
This is natural in active noise technology but since Bose claims that the hissing is virtually undetectable, I was kind of disappointed when I first heard it.
But, you hear the hissing only when the outside world is not noisy and it is low volume too. You don’t need noise cancelling headphones in quiet surroundings, so this is not much of a problem.
The headphones are not the best lookers and definitely give the impression of being flimsy. But, they appear like that because they are really lightweight and that’s the secret to their comfort. With time, you will realize that they are in fact, durable.
Some Tips for Owners of the Bose QC 25
After using these headphones for some time, here are a few tips for owners.
- Always keep the noise cancelling feature on even if the surroundings are not too loud. The sound quality is much better.
- Carry spare AAA batteries.
- Avoid wearing these along with earrings and studs as there will be some discomfort felt. If you wear hearing aids, the ear cups may not be big enough to be worn comfortably. These headphones are comfortable with glasses on though.
- These headphones work very well against consistent sounds like engine noises. They don’t work well for transient noises like gunshots or dogs barking, so avoid using them for these situations.
- Be careful while packing and unpacking the headphones in the case as the wires are very thin. Some people have faced issues because of this.
The headphones are arguably one of the best noise cancelling headphones available. The noise cancelling is great and they are a big pleasure to own.
Note that these are not soundproof headphones. They do not completely block noise but you hear things very faintly and that’s good enough. I don’t regret buying these and I’m confident that most people will feel the same way.
